Clean Your Dryer Vent

My  friends are continually asking me for advice on how to properly maintain various appliances in their homes. If I had to come up with one simple yet vital tip for dryer maintenance , it is: Clean your dryer vent after every use! There are three main reasons to clean your dryer vent:

  1. to prevent fires
  2. to shorten clothes drying time
  3. to save energy

Not to mention, to save yourself from calling an appliance repairman!

It’s pretty simple to pull the vent out, run your hand across the screen, and dispose of the lint. If you don’t do this regularly, the lint will build up and can become so thick that it clogs the vent. Even I can’t repair that, but I can refer you to someone who can. Don’t let it come to that though.

Curious about ways you can put your dryer lint to good use? Here are a few ideas:

  1. Add it to your compost pile. Dryer lint serves as a good brown/carbon material
  2. Use it as a fire starter. It’s light and dry which makes it great for kindling.
  3. Spread it around some bushes. Birds will pick it up and use it as nesting for their chicks.
